Educational Toy Ideas for Babies Aged 6 to 12 Months
Between 6 and 12 months, play changes quickly: many babies begin sitting more steadily, grasping and passing objects from one hand to the other, exploring sounds, moving around and showing increasing interest in their surroundings.
Rather than looking for one toy that claims to “teach” many things at once, it is often more useful to choose safe objects that are easy to handle and suited to the baby’s developmental stage.
What to look for in toys for 6 to 12 months
- Easy to grasp: pieces babies can hold without excessive effort.
- Sensory exploration: textures, gentle sounds, movement and visual contrast.
- Cause and effect: simple actions that create an understandable response.
- Movement: objects that invite reaching, rolling, pushing or handling.
- Safety: age-appropriate products with no accessible small parts, used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
5 useful types of toys
1. Rattles and sound toys
These can help babies explore the link between movement and sound while practising grasping and transferring objects between hands.
2. Balls and objects to reach for
An age-appropriate ball can invite babies to track movement, reach, roll and move to retrieve it.
3. Soft books
Textures, flaps, mirrors and gentle sounds turn a book into an object to explore as well as a shared moment with an adult.
4. Cubes and large pieces to handle
Simple fitting, stacking a few pieces or gently tapping two objects together lets babies experiment with space and movement.
5. Activity toys
Simple panels, activity cubes or toys with several elements can be interesting as long as they are age-appropriate and do not overwhelm the baby.
Do they need to be Montessori?
No. Montessori education includes specific materials, but many excellent baby toys are not Montessori materials. What matters is that they are safe, developmentally appropriate and allow active exploration.
